To Take, or Not to Take Along a Bag?

by Eric Holter on January 20, 2004

“Do not acquire gold, or silver, or copper for your money belts, or a bag for your journey…”
Matthew 10:9-10

“And he said to them, ‘But now, let him who has a purse take it along, Likewise also a bag…’” Luke 22:36

Jesus has specific and timely instructions for us as we walk the path of Discipleship. Not everything Jesus tells us in the Word can be locked down as a hard and fast rule or principle. In this case he gave clear instructions at one time and then countermanded those instructions at another. Jesus may tell us to do something one way, at a certain time, and another way later. When it comes to strategy and direction we must always ask and listen to our Lord and Master.

I’m thankful that Jesus cares so much about the details of my life. I’m hopeful knowing that Jesus has not left all detail up to me. It matters to him whether I do one something one way or another at various times.

Of course this means that I am utterly dependent on Him day by day. It means I must diligently seek His face and listen to His voice. I have to lay my ideas and plans before Him and give it attention to his voice through his Word and by His Spirit. This is a skill that I exercise imperfectly, yet I must continually practice. Thankfully, Jesus is patient and continues to speak and guide and direct my steps even when I am impatient to ask, or listen, or when I get his instructions wrong, or even, God forbid, when I disobey because I want my own will.

Thank you Jesus for speaking to me about the details of my life. Please keep me always before you, listening to your voice. Make me a happily dependent servant. Thank you for your incredible mercy and patience with me. Help me to grow in faith, trust, confidence and joy in your good, pleasing, and perfect will in all things. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
