“… yet we have not sought the favor of the Lord our God by turning from our iniquity and giving attention to the truth. ” Daniel 9:13
How can we seek the Lord? By turning from our iniquity, and giving attention to the truth. We must fight a two-pronged attack in our spiritual battle for holiness. We must fight to kill sin in ourselves, and we must turn our eyes, our minds, our thoughts, and our attention to the truth. Jesus said in John 17 “Sanctify them in the truth; Thy word is truth.” He also said, in Chapter 14 “I am the way and the truth and the life.” Jesus is also called the Word of God.
So for me to seek the Lord I must seek Him by giving attention, time, focus, and diligence to observing Jesus Christ in the Word. I must use the power that flows from setting my attention on Christ to the daily battle of killing my sin. I must make effort and progress on both fronts, for without a continuing view of Christ I will not have the power to overcome sin. And without victory over sin, my desire and enjoyment of my contemplation and delight in Christ will be deadened, distracted, and blurred.
O Jesus, please open my eyes to your beauty and glory. Let me give attention to you and your truth in the Word. Empower me to fight the good fight of faith, mortifying my flesh and killing the power of sin that still has residence in my body. How I need you, O Lord. Help me to seek your face, your grace, and your favor by turning daily from sin and giving attention to your truth. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
